Optimizing Photoshop Files for Web Design

In this series of articles, we will cover a wide range of topics related to setting up Photoshop files for web design.

Topics will include:

  • Using Photoshop layers to automate Web graphics creation
  • Using Photoshop layer names for automating buttons
  • Choosing GIF, JPG or PNG format for web graphics
  • Choosing between Table (HTML3) and Style Sheet (DHTML) Layout
  • Designing clean, user-friendly, fast-loading pages
  • Creating Backgrounds
  • Adding Flash movies and other multimedia to your page
  • Setting up layers for DHTML animation

File, New

This article, the first in the series, will cover the basics of setting up your file’s size and resolution. The next article will cover colour modes and backgrounds. In other words, in these two articles, I’ll answer the question, “What should you select when you say “File, New” in Photoshop?”

Every time you create a new image in Photoshop, you are presented with this window:

Creating graphics for the web is very different than creating graphics for printing. When you send graphics to a print shop and get 1,000 copies of a brochure, they are all identical. When you send a file to a web server and 1,000 different users view the pages, they will all see something slightly different. That’s because your printed brochures all came off of the same printing press, but each web site is viewed by a different user, in a different browser, with a different monitor, on a different platform, all configured with different settings.

What that means is the settings you would select for creating an image to be printed will not work when you are creating an image for the web.

Width & Height (AKA size) – These dimensions are the most important “new file attributes” for designing web pages.

Resolution – Resolution is complicated because both graphics files and monitors have resolution settings. However, this is more critical for print than for web design.

Size: Pixels

Computer images are made up of individual dots called pixels. Each pixel can be thought of as a single square on a piece of graph paper.

Zoom in on this 15×15-pixel graphic:

Monitors also display in pixels. The images you see on your screen are made up of rows and columns of pixels.

When you create graphics for the web, you should always set the measurements of the image in pixels.

Resolution: Pixels-per-inch

A graphic’s resolution is measured in dots per inch (DPI) or, sometimes, pixels per inch (PPI). This measurement tells you how many pixels fit into a 1-inch square.

How is the resolution used?

In print design, graphics are measured in inches (or centimetres) and dots-per-inch (or dots-per-centimetre). The combination of the size and the resolution determines the quality of the printed image.

If you create a graphic in Photoshop that is set to be 1-inch high and 1-inch wide at 72dpi, and then prints it, you will get a 1-inch graphic that is grainy or “pixelated.”

If you create a second image that is a 1-inch square at 144dpi and print it, it will still be 1″ square, but it will have twice the quality of the first because it has twice the number of pixels across and down.

While DPI is critical for print, it is practically meaningless on the web. What is important is the actual size in pixels of the file – that is the number of pixels the image contains across the top and down the side.

When images are displayed on-screen, they are measured in pixels and the resolution determines only the size of the image. Because graphics files are made up of pixels and monitors display in pixels, each pixel in a graphics file is displayed as one pixel on the monitor.

A 2-inch graphic at 72dpi and a 1-inch graphic at 144dpi will look the same on-screen because they both have a total of 144 pixels across the top and down the side.

Monitor size and resolution

Many people think that the size of your monitor determines the resolution. This is not true. Most monitors can be set to display at several different resolutions. You can have a 14-inch monitor set to a very high resolution, or you can set a 21-inch monitor to only 640×480 (640 pixels across the top and 480 pixels down the side).

Although not always technically accurate, screen resolution is generally accepted to be 72dpi and web graphics are built at this resolution.

  1. the size of the monitor, for example, 14- or 21-inch
  2. the resolution the user has selected, for example, 640×480 or 1024×768

Most users, however, don’t even know the dpi of their monitor and no-one really talks about monitors in dpi. Instead, the number of pixels displayed across and down the screen is used to describe a monitor’s resolution

If a 14-inch monitor and a 21-inch monitor are both set to the same resolution, say 600×800 (again, that’s 600 pixels across by 800 down), all of the images will appear larger on the 21-inch monitor because the same number of pixels are being displayed in a larger area.

However, if a smaller monitor is set to a low resolution (making each item appear larger) and a larger monitor is set to a higher resolution (making each item appear smaller), the actual size in inches of each graphic may end up being the same.

How does monitor resolution change image display?

Clearly, there’s no one correct resolution for a file. No matter what dpi you select in Photoshop, the image will display in the resolution set by the user.

What all of this really means is you can’t control the size of the elements on your page in a way that can be measured with a ruler. You can control the size of the elements in relation to the size of the user’s screen.

Photoshop File Size

Some web designers still design for 640×480 resolution so users with the “lowest common denominator” monitors can view their pages comfortably. However, statistics tell us the average computer user is running at 600×800. If we design our web pages to fit into this size screen (minus space for the browser window and toolbars!), we can be reasonably sure that most users will be able to view the key content without a lot of scrolling.

These pages may appear smaller or larger when measured in inches – depending on the physical size of each user’s screen – but they will always fit neatly into the browser window.

Back to Basics -Theory of Logo Design

You know what? There is actually no easy answer to this question. It isn’t something you can just slap together and it can’t be read out of any one book- the information on how to create a great logo comes from research.

The research that is necessary to create an effective brand starts with your design savvy. Next, you must investigate the company for which you’ve been commissioned to design for. Let me make clear that learning about a company cannot be done by simply nosing about for an hour to see how it ticks, rather it must be thoroughly understood from the perspective of its clients. What do they want? What are they looking for and what do they see when they look at your client’s the business? By speaking with employees, owners, partners and clients, mingling these interviews with solid facts about that particular industry you end up with solid clues that will help guide you to the beginnings of a successful business.

Where one logo succeeds for a restaurant, the same likely will not be true if used for Wall Street, simply because the needs of the clients are different. People looking for a place to eat may be looking for good food, a comfortable environment, and all for a modest price. A logo that communicates this feeling will draw new clients, while one that appears too rigid and all business might turn them away.

If a logo meets the need of the company and keeps the target market in mind, is visually striking and illustrious, can be easily reproduced, uses a limited number of colours (for reasons of reproduction costs), and still looks first-rate when scaled down, then you have yourself a winning brand.

Your logo must also be emotionally charged as it is often the very first thing a prospective client sees of a company and will likely make their impressions based on it from there. If stability is what you wish to convey then you will need to work the logo so that it instils that kind of an emotional reaction from the viewer.

Some basics
A basic starting point is to choose your fonts (serif or sans serif) and set your colour scheme. If you have already determined the emotional goal of your logo then font and colour choice will be more about fine-tuning rather than any kind of struggle. It is essential to have a basic understanding of colour otherwise you may convey the wrong message with poor colour choice, so take the time to update your knowledge base on the subject whenever you can.

Consider your shapes carefully. Rounded edges versus sharp corners can mean the difference between aggressive and passive messages. If the company you are designing the logo for wish to convey action and excitement then using smooth, curving shapes may not be the proper solution.

There are basic tricks to use during the process of designing a logo to ensure that it is not only aesthetically pleasing but also balanced. Try simply turning your design upside down to test the shape of your design and then look at it in a mirror. If the paper is thin enough I also put it up against a window, image-side down, in order to see through the sheet. Without realizing it we sometimes load our shapes and text too much on one side and by using these tests you can help prevent such occurrences.

One of the strongest methods of breaking down a logo to find its finer points is to get opinions. Approach your peers and have them analyze your work. Often they will see things you have overlooked and advise solutions. Although you should prepare yourself for the critique as it is never easy to take and in the wrong frame of mind you might take the wrong advice. By keeping an open mind and being confident in the parts of your design that work you will avoid feeling defeated and instead will flourish with the new ideas and advice.

How To Learn Digital Photo Editing

How To Learn Digital Photo Editing

Learning digital photo editing can be started at home. As long as you have the passion and you are willing to enhance your skills, you can definitely go a long way. Photo editing may not necessarily be about taking pictures but improving the shots taken. On the other hand, it would be better to learn the basics of photography to be able to imagine different lighting angles and resolutions. There are photos that need little or no editing at all if the right outputs have been achieved. Conversely, the modern technology allows many photographers to have their works beautified, through the help of editing tools and artists.

Where to Start
It is best to start with subjects that attract your interests. That way, it would be easy to study them for longer periods of time. Working on something that is not close to your heart may not be a good idea, as it may not have an impact on your life. Find subjects that are close or significant to you, as they will allow your imagination to flow better. You may also start with basic tools such as a camera with a flash and a computer with an Internet connection, so you can get the editing tools necessary.

Try taking photos in various lighting conditions and angles. There is no need to be perfect. In fact, the more you experiment, the more you will know about photography, pictures, lighting, movements and editing. You will be able to see and feel how hard or easy it is to capture moving objects, curves and other things that you see along the way. After experimenting with your camera, you can then take a look at the photos and analyze the actions you took.

Get a Good Guide
You can start watching tutorials to know how the dials on your camera work. You can then look back on your experimental photos and relate to the functions of the dials. You will be able to tell how you can improve the shots with those functions, so next time you use your camera, you can try them and see different results. You can also get books about photography to learn digital photo editing and get more ideas about depth, aperture, shutter speed and other factors.

Learn Digital Photo Editing by Using Editing Software
Now that you have an idea of how your camera works, you can start taking more photos and enhance them. Photo editing can be done in many ways. There are lots of programs in the market today that allows people to alter their photos. You can start with basic tools that are easy to use so you can see the effects on your photos. Once you are comfortable with basic tools, you can try advanced versions of these programs for more precise effects.

Learn Digital Photo Editing by Attending Classes
There are schools that offer lessons about digital photo editing. Most of these institutions offer more professional approaches to their students. There may be different requirements, depending on the modules that they offer. Some schools offer digital photo editing together with digital editing and other animated graphics subjects.

In the US, the average cost of enrolling into a digital photo editing class is $3700. Prices may vary on where you are planning to attend classes and what subjects you would like to master. Some programs run as short as 4 weeks, while some may be as long as 12 weeks. The New York Film Academy has a Digital Editing School that offers courses to students who want to learn digital photo editing on a technical aspect, as well as those who want to enhance their storytelling skills via digital media.

Cost Effective Software Packages
If you want to spend a little money to learn digital photo editing on a higher level, you can try software packages like Adobe Photoshop Elements and Lightroom. They both allow people to edit RAW photos with more options. They also offer a 30 day trial for both packages, so you can try before purchasing if you are unsure which one works best for you.

One-on-One Sessions
Nothing beats the experience of having someone teach you the basics and advance tricks of image editing. You can definitely learn digital photo editing faster if you have someone knowledgeable by your side. If you have a personal tutor or a friend who is willing to teach and help you learn digital photo editing, be sure to ask questions and try to engage yourself in as much as activities as you can. This will help you grasp the basics faster. If you are not learning as fast as your other friends, don’t worry. Photography and image editing are forms of art that depend on how people adapt to them. To learn digital photo editing, all you need to do is to focus and try to experiment with the tools more often.

Constant Practice
The practice is important in learning any type of skill. If you want to learn digital photo editing and be good at it, you have to dedicate your time and effort until you learn it. You may not learn instantly, particularly if you are new with the tools and functions. Contrariwise, once you get used to the processes, you will be more acquainted with the things that you can do. The good thing about photo editing is that you can use your imagination all the time. You can create something new out of an old picture and make another version of it. You may have a picture that seems unattractive at first, but you can improve it to make it appealing.

These are some of the ways on how you can learn digital photo editing. You can also ask your friends for recommendations if they have attended similar courses in the past. Like other skills that you have to learn in the past, you have to try different ways in order to achieve what you want. By getting the right information, materials and knowledge, it would be easier for you to produce the outputs that you like.
